Diabetes insipidus is a disorder of water balance and control in the body. Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) which is produced in the hypothalamus and secreted by pituitary gland controls the fluid balance in the body.
Amount of water excreted in the urine is controlled by ADH. Normally, most of the water is reabsorbed and concentrated urine is excreted. ADH binds to the receptors on the collecting duct of kidney and promotes reabsorbtion of water back into circulating blood. When ADH levels are low, collecting ducts are permeable to water and more diluted urine will be produced. This causes water loss from the body.
