What is diabetes insipidus, and what hormone is involved in this condition?
Diabetes insipidus: it is a condition characterized by large amounts of dilute urine and increased thirst, and it is condition that results from insufficient producttion of the antidiuretic harmone , they are 4 types Diabetes insipidus with different set of causes , they are central diabetes insipidus is due to lack of the hormone vasopressin( antidiuretic harmone) , this is due to damage of the hypothalamus or pituitary gland or genetics, 2nd type is nephrogenic : it occurs when the kidneys do not respond properly to vasopressin, 3rd type dipsogenic it is due to abnormal thirst mechansims in the hypothalamus, 4th type is gestational it occurs only during pregnancy, the harmone involved in diabetes insipidus is ADH ( anti diuretic harmone) or vasopressin , it is produced by hypothalamus and then secreted by the pituitary gland into the bloodstream at the base of the brain, this harmone needed to control the fluid balance in the body it does this by making the kidneys produce more concentrated urine.
