When studying religions, scholars some times ask how far a religion is defined ideas of permanence or impermanence. Permanence can be defined as that which is everlasting and/or never changes. Impermanence, conversely, is that which is finite and/or is susceptible to change. With that said, the question is asking you to examine the religion of Hinduism through this lens of permanence/impermanence. In thinking about this question, I would encourage you to focus on specific Hindu beliefs (such as samsara, karma, moksha, dharma, caste system, view of the gods, etc.) and/or practices (meditation, asceticism, etc.). As always, there are arguments to be made on both sides of the fence here. I just want to see you make a case for one or the other.

With the above in mind, in organizing your response you must provide three examples that either or agree or disagree with the prompt. As always, please be sure that you place each of your examples in their own distinct paragraphs as well so that your reader is aware of your three positions.

You will receive written feedback on the questions you choose to answer within 1-2 days after the due date of the assignment. Please use information from the Power Points slides, as well as the textbook, to answer these questions. Responses should be anywhere from 1-2 paragraphs for each question.

Please provide a response to 2 of the critical thinking questions for this chapter. Label your answers clearly (i.e., which question you are responding to).

1. Assume for a moment you are in a sexually active relationship with someone you love deeply and with whom you are hoping to spend the rest of your life. One evening, your partner expresses a desire to engage in a sexual activity that you are not interested in and that you find somewhat offensive (you pick the activity). How would you react? Explain what you think would be the best way to handle this situation in your relationship.

2. Suppose that a heterosexual couple is feeling a strong mutual desire to be sexually intimate, but they’ve agreed that intercourse (coitus) should be saved for marriage. Explain how they might balance their desire for sexual intimacy with their moral convictions regarding sex and marriage.

3. Now imagine for a moment that you have a 14-year-old son and you are discussing sexual issues with him. What would you want him to know and understand about the behaviors discussed in this chapter? Explain your answer. Would your answers different for a daughter and a son? Why or why not?

4. Consider a situation in which sexual partners are discussing experimenting with various sexual positions. Explain why some couples might find the various positions appealing while others might reject some of them.

5. Discuss the influences or experiences from childhood or teen years that you feel often shape people’s adult feelings and attitudes toward sexual activities.

Write a response to this post, the response must be 125 words.

LM

I have to say that I haven’t really thought about this at all. I believe there is a higher power and believe in integrity and good moral values though we all have our faults and shortcomings. I’m not sure I believe one version of the purpose or first cause of the universe and have always been willing to view other’s ideas, thoughts, and beliefs in this area with an open mind along with a healthy dose of skepticism. This area of philosophy and maybe most areas to me are personal. I am a shy person by nature and tend toward observation and the willingness to see other sides of a discussion. I do not believe that I am an expert or know everything. We all learn something new every day even if it is small. I really try to make decisions in my life that will be good for myself and my family’s happiness and wellbeing. I believe in being honest and as fair as possible, which we all know there are shades of fairness not just a 50/50 split. I don’t really like politics so my views are my own and don’t generally share my thoughts in that arena willingly as political views are opinions based on facts that can be biased and too personally charged. I want to live in a world with acceptance and respect for my personal beliefs. I don’t judge other people and expect the same though I am continually let down, I refuse to lose hope.

In narrative format discuss the key facts and critical issues of the life, crimes, and conviction of Aileen Wuornos.

1. Given her life circumstances do you believe that her life circumstances were ultimately a product of her free will? If so, to what extent could we claim that her freedom was at least limited by factors beyond her control?

2. To what extent might her "choices" - to be promiscuous, to engage in underage drinking, to act criminally - have been determined for her, given the sexual and verbal abuse to which she was subjected as a child?

3. If Aileen Wuornos' behaviors were at least in part, a product of her early life experiences and formative development, should she still be regarded as morally blameworthy and legally accountable for her actions?
