Choose two parts of the brain and discuss how they might be related in function. How might a neuron in one structure depend for its function on what is happening in a neuron in the other structure? Draw a conclusion about the way we localize functions in the brain: Was Broca justified in labeling a speech center in the brain with so few patients? How many brains are necessary to draw a conclusion? What does localization mean, after all? There is no strictly right or wrong answer to this question, but only thoughtful responses.
Describe an example in your own experience of misattributing a body function to a mental function or misattributing a mental function to a body function. For example, did doing chores as a kid really make you tired?

Chapter 3 discusses social behavior, and some of the variables that allow humans to be “ultrasocial” (existing in vary large cooperative societies). Philosophically, think about this chapter in terms of the Social Contract, and what seems to be necessary in order to maintain the Social Contract (and we’ll discuss that more fully in class).
The main idea that Haidt puts forth in this context is that reciprocity is key to upholding the Social Contract, and living socially.
So after reading Chapter 3 (“Reciprocity with a Vengeance”) reflect on the following:
1. Haidt argues that two variables that uphold reciprocity are
gratitude and vengeance. In your own words, how would you summarize
the main argument of what Haidt is saying with respect to how
gratitude and vengeance function in a cooperative society (and make
specific reference to the chapter when answering)?
2. Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with this? Explain
why.
3. Another variable that Haidt argues is essential to a large
cooperative society is gossip. After reading that section on
gossip, watch the following TedTalk by Elaine Lui. Although Lui
focuses on celebrity gossip, what larger point(s) is she making
that coincide with what Haidt is saying?
4. Do you find yourself agreeing or disagreeing with Haidt and
Lui regarding the significant role that gossip plays in society?
Explain why.

You were at work quite late last night organizing some important files. You left the files stacked on your desk for a subordinate to pick up in the morning to deliver right away to an important meeting. When you arrive in the morning you see the subordinate is "picking up" the files, but not as you had intended. The subordinate dropped the files! All your hard work lies in disarray on the floor. The subordinate is hurrying to pick them up and is apologizing profusely. Your thoughts are fleeting between altruism and aggression! To determine which you might choose, answer the following questions:
a. Choose two aversive incidents described in the text that increase aggressive behavior. Explain how those two incidents could very possibly be present in the above description (even though they are not mentioned), and explain how the two incidents could increase your likelihood of being aggressive in the above situation.
b. On the other hand, you might choose to help pick up the papers. Identify three variables given in the above description that research says could increase or decrease your helping behavior. Briefly explain how each might affect your likelihood of helping.
c. Add to the above description to increase the likelihood that you would help. Specifically, change the above description to include three other conditions (beyond those mentioned in Question 16) that research has found would usually increase your helping behavior.
d. Use two of the three theories presented in class on why people sometimes refuse or don't want help to explain why the subordinate might reject your offer of help in the above situation.
