Demographers have noted that the world’s population distribution will undergo a major shift in the next 30 years. Describe this shift and identify the types of strains it will create in both the United States and in other countries.
The geographical distribution of the population has undergone major changes in the past fifty years and will continue to experience significant transformations during the coming decades. While the developed world became mostly urban around 1950, developing regions, including Asia and Africa, which are still mostly rural today, will have more people living in urban areas than rural areas by 2030.
The shift of population brought a number of the advantage as well as disadvantage, the economic growth, and opportunities for improving people’s well-being, for poverty reduction and for the promotion of sustainable development, but it also brings serious challenges in many countries.
In the United States, the population shift experiencing major challenges, for instance, Detroit population in 2000 was 951,270 which dropped to only 713,777 by 2010. In 2016, the city estimated population is 677,116. Detroit population has been declining for more than 60 years, and its 2017 population represent a 1 percent decrease from its 2010 population. Because of population shift, the Detroit now has a large number of abandoned buildings and homes which create pressure on the economy of the city.
According to me, the population shift creates both economic and social challenges either increased or decreased. A large number of population shifting creates environmental and social problems. In Asia, we can see the increased rate of criminal activities in urban areas due to population shifting while in Africa we can see the pressure on natural resources.
