You have just learned that you will have three students with disabilities in your classroom. List three ways you could better meet their needs.
One of the challenges a teacher would face in inclusive classrooms is to deal with disabled and normal children in the same classroom. Students with different needs need to understand each other better before starting their journey together.
So, firstly, as a teacher I will spend some time to understand what kind of difficulty the students have and how to meet their needs. If the students are taught in a way they understand or instruct them in a way they understand, it would be very helpful. I would design materials that would suit them and delivery methodology that would make them understand the lessons easily.
Secondly, I would discuss about disabilities and the need to embrace and include them as normal people. I would share information about those disabilities and encourage other students to help them thus creating a supportive environment. This way, other students won’t make fun of them instead accept them as one of them and also learn helping tendency. It would also help the disabled children feel accepted and supported.
I would spend some time outside the classroom to help those students. This additional reinforcement would help them keep pace with other students. I would also seek the help of those students’ parents in supporting them with the additional material at home.
