One of the most important things that contributes to the gender pay gap is the gender roles and norms that we have at home, in the society and at the workplace. When it comes to gender roles, families play a major role along with the culture in determining the place of each gender in the society by projecting what each gender should do and promote superiority of the male gender while allots certain occupations for the female gender. This would mean that these roles are formed and performed with a mindset of introducing and promoting gender inequality and increase the pay gap. Most of the societies suggests that women are physically weak thus, they should take-up certain types of feminine jobs and that they cannot men in the workforce. Thus, even for the same work done by men and women, the pay is different in many countries, including the most advanced countries. This difference in pay further introduces more discriminatory practices in the society and at the workplace when it comes to doing the household works or when considering someone for promotion. Thus, both occupational sex segregation and chores done at home contribute to the gender gap in pay and divide the society in the name of gender.
