How is gender different than sex? Describe and evaluate at least 2 third gender roles and three sexualities found in humans.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The difference between sex and gender is that sex is a biological concept based on physical and physiological characteristics, whereas gender deals with personal, societal and cultural perceptions of sexuality. Third gender or third sex is a concept in which individuals are categorized, either by themselves or by society, as neither man nor woman. The third gender roles can pertain to androgynes, who are partly male and partly female in appearance or of indeterminate gender, as well as intersexed individuals, who may have both male and female sexual organs or characteristics.

When it comes to sexuality, there are many ways humans can feel sexually attracted – to others of the same gender, to others of the different gender, to both, to neither or even to himself or herself. Some of these are described as under:

  • Pansexuality: This refers to sexual attraction to people not only from all genders but also transgendered, transsexual, androgynous and also gender fluid people.
  • Monosexuality: This refers to sexual attraction to one gender. It could be heterosexual (attraction to opposite sex) or homosexual (attraction to same sex).
  • Asexuality: Asexuals are those who are neither interested in nor desire sexual activity.

For example, did transpeople, agender folks, non-binary folks exist before mainstream society acknowledged them? Additionally, why is today being declared a different moment for more open conversations around gender identities and gender categories than the past—what has shifted to make this happen?
