Why do sociologists find it important to differentiate between sex and gender?
What can be done to lessen the effects of gender stratification in the workplace? How does gender stratification harm both men and women?
Sociologists and many other social scientists have raised the
question of the difference between sex and gender. They regard to
sex and gender to be two different approaches. Sex is the physical
or physiological characters which differentiate between a male and
a female on the grounds of the reproductive system. Gender is the
term given by the society in order to differentiate between a male
and a female on the grounds of social or cultural distinctions. Sex
of a person which is determined by the biological organs does not
correspond with the gender associated with him/her. Sociologists
find it important to make a distinctions between sex and gender so
as to create a distinction of what we are bound by. The sexual
orientation of a person makes him/her find their emotional and
sexual attraction. Gender, on the other hand, is the group in which
the society bounds its people and creates beliefs about them.
Gender disparity is present in such a fluid form that it becomes
very difficult to spot them out. Especially when it comes to the
disparity in the workplace it becomes much complicated. The
disparity can be analyzed in a company when because of the personal
favors, promotions become an easy task to deal on. the policies and
processes of the companies related to the inclusion and promotion
of their female employees should be reevaluated in order to end the
disparity. At times, the definitions of ambitions and success have
a different meaning for every employee and individual which creates
couis in the company. Women are considered as role models and are
placed at a position where they are asked to interact with other
people. These strategies are taken up by the companies in order to
make their work done. Gender disparity brings stress, depression,
and anxiety in the minds of the men. When they are not allowed to
attain a position which they can earn through their capabilities,
they tend to become furious and stressed. At times, they are left
behind for promotions and increment and the females are awarded
such a position. They feel a great insult to their talent and
ability. Many times the male ego comes in between the progress of a
male employee. He cannot see a woman to go further and attain a
good and reputed position when he is lagging behind. Men also feel
insulting and stressed when they have to work under the guidance of
a woman.
Gender stratification is a curse for both men and women. Benefits
given on account of gender do not prove to be a boon for the
individuals and the company as well.
