What is the difference between Intrinstic and Extrinsic motivation? What do both refer to? How are they similar and different?
Intrinsic motivation refers to internal motivation. It drives an individual from within to accomplish a certain task. It leads to personal satisfaction. Extrinsic motivation on the other hand is a behaviour driven through external reinforcement or avoidance of punishment. An individual indulges in a behaviour to either earn a reward or to avoid a punishment.
For instance, I personally love baking. Baking for family get-together, birthdays and in leisure is self satisfying. I am intrinsically motivated to bake. I have an urge or the need to satisfy to feel good about myself. On the other hand, I am motivated to study only so that I do not fail and get good marks. Receiving an A+ in final tests, motivates me to study and perform well.
Intrinsic motivation pushes a person from within to acheive a task. Intrinsic motivation keeps a person going on their own. They don't need external rewards to motivate them.
