Intrinsic motivation refers to internal motivation. It drives an individual from within to accomplish a certain task. It leads to personal satisfaction. Extrinsic motivation on the other hand is a behaviour driven through external reinforcement or avoidance of punishment. An individual indulges in a behaviour to either earn a reward or to avoid a punishment.
I personally love baking. Baking for family get-together, birthdays and in leisure is self satisfying. I am intrinsically motivated to bake. I have an urge or the need to satisfy to feel good about myself. On the other hand, I am motivated to study only so that I do not fail and get good marks. Receiving an A+ in final tests, motivates me to study and perform well.
Intrinsic motivation pushes a person from within to acheive a task. Intrinsic motivation keeps a person going on their own. They don't need external rewards to motivate them.
