(Answer) Globalisation: It is the integration of markets, socio-economic policies and even populations across the globe. With the availability of frequent and safe transport options around the world, individuals have been able to migrate easily to antipodes.
For instance, globalisation has impacted daily lives to a great degree through global economic markets. Perhaps the salt you put in your food is imported by the tonne from another country. Cuba did export sugar to the US for a very long time.
Also, globalisation has become seamless through better connectivity via social media and smartphones. Interacting with individuals from different cultures is easy.
Thirdly, “soft culture” through television shows, films and music are easily available for everyone to experience. The popular sitcom “Friends” gained international popularity that helped America market their brand in some small way.
Recently, there have been several people in political power who are trying their best to fight and even blatantly reject globalisation. Since travel has become quicker, simpler and less dangerous since the early 1900’s, it is only obvious that individuals will be more likely to travel. If people were limited to living only in their own country at the beginning of the century it is only because connectivity and transport were not as fluid as it is today.
However, denying that the world is interacting more easily now than they were a few decades ago is like trying to ignore an elephant standing a meter away. Immigrant populations have not been easily accepted in certain parts of the world. Naturally, several liberals began to be more inclusive of minorities. This gesture has been emulated deservingly in rallies around the world.
When a cynic thinks about globalisation, they might equate it to terrorism. However, recent events have proved that terrorism is more a matter of mental health than it is about alien cultures.
If handled well, globalisation could be a positive force. For instance, people easily adopt each other’s cuisines with international restaurants gaining popularity. The taco, burrito and even sushi have become popular in most large metros because of populations interacting well with each other. We see cultures interacting with each other quite harmoniously.
The three examples of major migration patterns visible in our society today are the Jewish, Indian and Chinese diaspora. The atrocities that the Jews faced in Europe led them to migrate to other nations around the world. Also, the history and population crisis in nations like India and China, have led to their migration to several nations. These immigrant populations become a part of a nation’s workforce, culture and even increase the demand in markets and cause for an increase in production. This is why immigration is also a good force for a nation’s economy.
