  • Singapore English knows two varieties: that of Standard Singapore English, which follows British spelling and grammar, and Colloquial Singapore English, the last one also known under its popular term ‘Singlish.
  • Singapore became an independent Republic in 1965, and ever since the use of English has increased still further. English dominates important parts of Singapore in practice, English dominated both in the institutional and private life of the nation. It is the language of the government, of administration and employment and even schools.
  • Many of the citizens of Singapore speak Singlish at home and with friends and enjoy local TV comedies featuring Singlish-speaking characters.Singlish is used when talking with intimate persons
while SSE is used with superiors and most foreigners.
  • This means that Singaporeans switch between SSE and Singlish according to situations. It follows from the findings of their language use that SSE and Singlish are used for two different functions.
  • Been myself to singapore I have seen that people still value the importance of speaking Singlish as they consider it as a part of their identity and therefore holds value for them eventhough Standard English is used more often in universities and even when one goes out to stores etc. People living their feel both are important in their own ways since people come from all around the world so standard englih is important whereas Singlish is something which holds value for the natives since it keeps them connected with their roots.
