According to anthropologists, ethnicity concerns the cultural characteristics such as language, history, values, and customs that connect a particular group or groups of people to each other. On the other hand, Race refers to a person's physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye color. Both race and ethnicity share an ideology of common ancestry but at the same time, they differ in several ways. The race is primarily unitary. You can only have one race, while you can claim multiple ethnic affiliations. You can identify ethnically as Irish and Polish, but you have to be essentially either black or white.
Since Race refers to a person's physical characteristics, such as bone structure and skin, hair, or eye color. So the race is a biological concept whereas ethnicity is a social and cultural concept. Hence, ethnicity is preferred in social sciences.
Ethnocentrism refers to judging another culture solely by the values and standards of one's own culture. According to the phenomenon generates a feeling that one's own culture is superior to other cultures. This also means that there is a generalized feeling of prejudice and hostility towards the other culture. An ethnocentric person is not a preferred choice to do anthropological work. Such a person is filled with biases and prejudice that will inhibit one's understanding of the ways of life and customs of other people. On the other hand, Cultural relativism refers to not judging a culture to our own standards. Cultural relativism does not involve a feeling of inferior or superior. An effort is made to understand cultural practices of other groups in its own cultural context. For example, instead of thinking eating raw meat is disgusting, on should think that it happens in other cultures. Following this approach methodologically for an anthropologist means that he or she is temporarily suspending their own aesthetic and moral judgments. Here the aim is to develop an understanding for a culture that is not one of our own.
