Religion is the invention of man and different cultures followed their own religions and made their own Gods. People venerated natural elements because they were uncontrollable. Almost all the cultures have natural elements as Gods. When civilisations started growing, people started treating people as Gods. Whoever pulled the first strings of change in the society were considered to be Gods. Take Jesus for example, he broke the old system that was hypocritical and showed a new way, so he is celebrated as God. The pettiest part is that what he started as a movement started to operate as an institution that is richer than any other system in the world.
This static and ritual nature of religions brought down the religions itself. Today most people around the world are ritualistic religious people who go to church, temple and mosque for the sake of going. The radicals questioned the established nature of religion. Science has started bringing new insights that shook the base of religions.
So, today, in my point of view, religion holds no water for an ordinary person but for a religious fanatic, it is everything and they are few in number. The world will not be run by the religions anymore but it will be taken forwards by rational, intellectual and realistic people who live in the present rather than thinking about their past for confession to a priest or carry Adam and Eve’s sin on their shoulders or live in the future thinking of an imaginary heaven where they will be given milk and honey.
