These conferences draw together novices and experts alike, inviting active members to share their findings with calls for papers which often set the theme for that year’s conference. You are tasked with finding an academic conference within your field and selecting two papers published by individuals who will, or have in the last three years, presented at that conference. The two pieces of writing you select for this project should be closely tied to a research topic you are distinctly interested in. You will pursue this research topic throughout the semester in our class, so select your research topic with care. Using your understanding of rhetorical context, you will analyze these two papers to better understand how scholars in your field talk to one another. You will consider how the articles represent the larger conversation at hand and what gaps might be yet filled in the conversation. On a broader scale, consider how Swales’ set of criteria for discourse communities is fulfilled by your field.
