Swenson and colleagues’ (2016) study (“Parents’
use of praise and criticism in a sample of young children seeking mental
health services”)
This paper by Swenson and colleagues studies the consistency of the self report of the praise and criticism of the parents with respect to their observed behaviour during an experimental session.
The premise of the study is based on previous papers and the same has been explicitly represented in the paper in the form of a literature review, at the start of the article. Initially in the paper, the conclusion of previous studies on: parental feedback, parent praise and child’s response to the praise & criticism, has been discussed. Further, a need to study the relationship between self-report of praise/criticism to the actual has been suggested. Based on this, the procedure for the experiment, sampling method and statistics involved in the study has been explained. Finally the results and subsequent discussion of the experiment has been performed.
As seen above, the basic premise starts with the missing link in the parent child interaction i.e the relationship between self-reported and actual accounts of praise/criticism. Further, the author concludes his findings on this based on an actual exercise. The further discussion and conclusion is based on this firsthand account of the experiment.
Thus, it can be said that the paper uses primary sources to present their arguments discuss the findings.
