Intrinsic Motivation:
Intrinsic motivation is defined as the behavior that is
stimulated by internal rewards. It is the
motivation to involve in a behavior that is caused from within the
person because it provides satisfaction to the person.
Extrinsic Motivation:
Extrinsic motivation can be described as the behavior that
stimulated by external rewards (money, grades or
praise). Such motivation comes from outside the person and is
called known as reward-driven behavior.
Ways to enhance Intrinsic Motivation in
children:
- Empower the child with a sense of conscious choice.
- Enable the child to set higher goals
- Restructuring the reward system by involving more internal
rewards rather than external.
- Guide and teach children self-direction and independence.
- Build a sense of confidence in the child
- Arouse child's interest
Outcome of Extrinsic Motivation:
- Due to external rewards that can individual gains, individual
many times perform a task or a behavior not out of interest but due
to the external reward. for example: an individual may not like
his/her job, but have to go to work because they need the money to
pay their expenditure.
- External rewards can cause dependence on the rewards and when
the rewards is not presented, individual doesnot perform upto their
potential and leads to decrease in the motivation.
