Please discuss the following questions:
What are some examples of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation in your life or of those you know? Have you ever experienced or witnessed the over justification effect?
Do you think you are a good liar or know someone who is? Are you fairly accurate in detecting lies in others? Discuss your experiences with deception.
Extrinsic motivation occurs when behaviour is driven by the desire to earn a reward or avoid punishment. For instance, I dislike having to write examinations and study for them only because I do not want to fail. Another example would be me sharing pictures of my life on social media because I enjoy having others view it and respond to it. On the other hand, intrinsic motivation is driven by a desire of doing something because it is interesting or pleasing. For example, I read a lot of books simply because it is my hobby. I travel when I get the chance because I derive a sense of meaningfulness out of it.
The overjustification effect is a phenomena that occurs when an expected external incentive decreases the intrinsic motivation to perform a task. I believe that I often experience this effect as a student. Although I thoroughly enjoy learning and find my subject very interesting, I find that examinations tend to make me feel less motivated to spend time memorising my course material.
Please post the other questions separately as we are supposed to answer just one question or four sub parts of a question.
