Human beings passes through various stages of development their life. Developmental Psychology deals with the process of growth and development as well as adaptation to different situations in life.This branch of science examines various aspects of development such as  motor,physiological,psychological and cognitive development. This also analyzes the fact of achievement of knowledge through out the stages of development vs birth with innate mental structures which is in opposition to the concept of learning through experience. Though the inherited genetic traits determines the characteristics of an individual, there is continuous interaction of genes with the external environment and vice versa. This reciprocal interaction determines how certain traits are expressed in a particular environment and gives rise to concrete behavioral traits.

Study of human development is of major importance in almost all strata like education, health care and related courses as well as in social work too. It helps to identify the complexity of the process of development that is ongoing through out one's life.This also provides an over view of self, the reason for certain characteristics, personality or preferences. Parents can benefit by understanding the stages of development, the physical and psychological changes during each stage. This helps them to have a better understanding of changes noticed in their children during various stages of growth. A knowledge of age based developmental needs also improves age appropriate communication patterns, understand and express emotions and also helps to spot problems.
