Yoga is one of the complementary and alternative therapies that can be used in mental health treatment and several other diseases and disorders. Yoga therapists are often required to be licensed. In the United States and Canada, many states do license yoga teachers, particularly those that teach Hatha yoga, which mainly focuses on providing fitness, improving wellness or physical condition. Yoga therapists are often required to work under the supervision of a licensed medical care provider or a social worker.

Yoga in improving mental health: The psychological benefits of practicing yoga is dated back to the 20th century. The mental health professionals have started thinking about yoga as an alternative option for improvement of mental health from the last two decades. Various research studies proved that yoga practice can enhance cognitive functioning, reduce stress, regulation of emotions, improved mood, physical flexibility, improved neuromuscular performance and increased aerobic capacity. The three advantages of practicing yoga are, it is free of side effects, can be practiced at home and is also a cost-effective approach.

Practicing yoga does not require a physician’s order. However, designing yoga therapy for a particular disease or imbalance requires the diagnosis to be confirmed by the physician. Recently, the number of physicians referring to yoga therapists are also increasing. Yoga does not cause any side effects when it is designed and done under the supervision of a professional. The medications prescribed by the physician should not be discontinued unless specified by the.

Yoga practice generally includes breathing exercises, posture (Hatha yoga) and meditation, which together balance the energy centers of the body. There are 22 types of yoga, which again include modifications. Specific yoga practices are beneficial for particular health problems. Yoga therapy has a place in the treatment of mental health problems especially as an adjunctive. It is a cost-effective and safe approach to preventing and treating or reducing the signs of mental psychological illnesses.
