Abstract

Internet privacy is the right to keep sensitive data and information produced as a result of using the web, private. ... Unfortunately, our world is far from ideal, and this means that we need to keep personal information safe from being used in the wrong way.

There are three elements in privacy on social media: secrecy, anonymity and solitude. It is a state which can be lost, whether through the choice of the person in that state or through the action of another person.

When talking and sharing thoughts and information online with people you don't know or trust, keep in mind that once a message, photo or video is shared, there is no control over where it goes. Good privacy settings help ensure that you have control over who you 'friend'.

Biggest threats to online privacy in 2020

  1. Bad Password Practices. It may seem like a simple piece of advice, but using strong passwords is just as important as ever.
  2. Phishing Attacks. Phishing, or gaining information by tricking a user, is on the rise in recent days
  3. Unsecured Web Browsing.
  4. Malware and virus attack
  5. Internet of Things.

In its most basic sense, social media is a shift in how people discover, read and share news, information and content. Social media has become extremely popular because it allows people to connect in the online world to form relationships for personal, political and business use.

Because users have a tendency to trust social media networks to some extent, they create a privacy risk for themselves when exposing personal information.

Whatever information gets posted online, it is no longer private, and may end up falling into wrong hands. Even if you have put in place the highest possible security measures, some of your friends, colleagues and companies you interact with on social media, can end up leaking your personal information

Here we are discussing only the major issues concerning online privacy.

  • Information Mishandling.
  • Location Tracking.

For Example, Social networking sites vary in the levels of privacy offered. For some social networking sites like Facebook, providing real names and other personal information is encouraged by the site.

This information usually consists of the birth date, current address, and telephone number(s). Some sites also allow users to provide more information about themselves such as interests, hobbies, favorite books or films, and even relationship status.

Most users do not realize that while they may make use of the security features on Facebook the default setting is restored after each update.

All of this has led to many concerns that users are displaying far too much information on social networking sites which may have serious implications on their privacy. Facebook was criticized due to the perceived laxity regarding privacy in the default setting for users.
