Title VII prohibits discrimination based on race, color, gender, religion, and national origin. Why do you think these specific classes are protected? In your opinion, what other classes should be protected and why?
Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed a job applicant could be rejected by employer because of the race, religion, sex or national origin. However when Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, the discrimination by the employer on the basis of an individual's sex, race, religion, national origin or color became illegal. The law protects employees of a company as well as job applicants. It protected specific classes to ensure that they are selected on the basis of the abilities necessary to perform a job, thus providing an important tool for enforcing equal opportunity in the workplace.
Title VII protects applicants and employees against discrimination based on race, color, religion, national origin. Earlier "sex" as a protected class wasn't included but today it also covered under the act. However it does not includes disability discrimination and age discrimination, thus in my opinion it should provide equal opportunity for these specific classes, thus should be included.
