A real-life example of perjury case: Marion Jones had doped during an Olympics in which she had won several gold medals. She was accused of doping, but she rejected the accuse and had maintained that she was innocent. She was later found to have doped and was convicted of perjury.

Elements or perjury are as follows;

  • Oath: Jones had sworn that she was clear from any wrongdoing. The swearing part is the oath here.
  • Intend: She made the false statement intentionally.
  • Falsification: Jones had made a falsified statement that she had not committed any felony.
  • Materiality: This check if Jones' statement that she was not at felony is capable of influencing the jury from delivering justice.

The general elements of perjury are as stated above. The elements of perjury appear in Jones giving her statement that she was not at any fault.

A possible defense for this perjury case is that Jones was emotionally exhausted due to the accusations against her. All her career and fame were at stake due to the issue and hence due to the circumstances, she was in a depressed state and couldn't present facts appropriately to the court.
