No, social loafing and Theory X are not similar theories.
Social loafing refers to the tendency of individuals to put less effort when they are part of a large group. Because all members of the group are pooling their efforts to achieve a common goal, each individual of the group contributes less than they would if they were alone responsible for the work.
Examples- If in a restaurant there is a small number of customers present then all the servers need not to work even if they are on duty. But when large number of customers is there then they all work because they are responsible to serve customers.
Another example can be when people let more skilled and talented members of the group take over when it comes to decision making and expect them to carry the load of work.
Theory X describes people who dislike work, have little ambition and are unwilling to take responsibility of the work. They do not perform in group as well as individually.
Example- A company with low skilled workers who are uneducated and do not want to work then company can use Theory x methods to make them work.
The major difference between social loafing and theory x is that in social loafing individual do not want to work in large group when responsibility of the work is not on him or her while in theory x individual do not want to work individually as well as in group.
