Classification: Gentamicin belongs to a class of drugs known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

Uses and dosage range:

Topical:

• This medication comes in solution form to be instilled into the eye and in ointment form to be applied to the eyes. For eye infections, gentamicin solution is usually used every 4 to 8 hours and the ointment is applied 2 to 4 times a day.
• For eye infections, the recommended dose of gentamicin is ½-inch of ointment applied to the affected eye(s) 2 to 3 times daily or 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye every 4 hours.

Adverse reaction:

• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhea
• decreased appetite
• pain at the injection site
• headache
• fever
• joint pain
• unusual tiredness

Contraindications & Precaution:

• It causes Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage).
• This effect is increased when you also use certain other medicines, including: antivirals, chemotherapy, injected antibiotics, medicine for bowel disorders, medicine to prevent organ transplant rejection.

Patient management issues:

• Do not use gentamicin if you are pregnant. It could harm the unborn baby. Use effective birth control to prevent pregnancy during treatment.
