Stigma is when someone sees you have a negative way due to a specific characteristic. When someone negatively treats you due to your mental disease this is often discrimination. Stigma happens when a society defines someone by their illness instead of who they're as an individual. For instance, they could be labeled ‘psychotic’ instead of a person experiencing psychosis’.

Some of the effects of stigma include:

  • feelings of shame, hopelessness, and isolation
  • reluctance to ask for help or to get treatment

These problems make individuals suffering from mental health suffer even worse.

Cultural and nonsecular teachings often influence beliefs about the origins and nature of the mental disease and shape attitudes towards the unsound. additionally to influencing whether unsound individuals experience social stigma, beliefs about the mental disease can affect patients’ readiness and willingness to hunt and cling to treatment. understanding individual and cultural beliefs about mental disease are important for the implementation of effective approaches to psychological state care.
