COLLAPSE
What role do your emotions serve? And is it okay to express them in the workplace? A salesperson with intense passion can convince someone to make a purchase. On the other hand, an angry manager can prompt an unfair review. In this discussion, you are asked to help your team to understand and manage their emotions in the workplace. To get started, review the following article: Like It or Not, Emotions Will Drive the Decisions You Make Today.
Assume that you are a team leader, and your team is under a deadline to get a lot done. You have noticed that some of your team members tend to get overwhelmed and make emotional decisions. Other team members seem to thrive in those situations and are motivated by the deadline.
Based on this article, make a list of things you can do as a manager to help your team to understand and manage their emotions so they all can be productive. For instance, what could you teach them about emotions? How would you pair people to work together? What would help them to learn about their emotions so they can be more productive in the workplace?

Who bears the burden of proof has consequences for which side may prevail in a court of law--and in other contexts as well.
The burden of proof at NASA, in the 1970s, was on those who claimed a spacecraft was safe to launch. Just prior to the 1986 Challenger disaster, the burden was shifted: the vehicle was presumed safe, and engineers raising doubts about its safety bore the burden of proving 'genuine risk' in order to stop the launch.
Morton Thiokol's engineers could show reasonable grounds for concern (O-rings had not been tested in freezing cold), but they had not set up tests to demonstrate that the O-rings actually would malfunction in the cold, and cause an explosion. Testing takes time and resources--and cost benefit analysis often suggests benefits of proceeding with less, rather than more, testing.
Identify criteria used in deciding who bears the burden of proof from the list of criteria below:
A. Taking precaution to ensure safety costs money and time.
True/False?
B. There were other factors that might explain the failure of the launch besides the O-ring failure.
True/False?
C. There are always addition factors that might explain a system failure and so the suggestion that the failure was due to shifting the burden of proof is bogus.
True/False?
D. The model suggests that the cause of the shuttle disaster is conclusively known.
True/False?

On the second day of eighth grade, an older girl shoved
Emily into the road. Thinking she was playing, Emily shoved her
back. Rumors began circulating within the school, and Emily gained
a reputation as being aggressive. The older girl was part of a
group of girls who continued to spread rumors about Emily; they
also began stalking her during gym class. Some of the teachers,
believing the rumors about Emily, accused her of bullying the other
girl, and cautioned her parents about her behavior.
Roughly once every 2 weeks, Emily's parents would meet with the
principal to try to convince him that Emily was the victim. No one
in authority admitted that bullying existed at the school. Nothing
was done.
For 3 years, the bullying continued with silent phone calls,
threats, and occasional physical incidents. Each time after Emily
or her parents complained, the teachers would glare at her in the
hallway. After the bully graduated, the rest of the group of girls
continued the bullying. Once, when they cornered Emily against the
wall, a teacher approached them and threatened Emily with further
punishment if she continued her behavior. The teacher then sent the
other girls back to class.
