Purpose: To discuss the differences and interrelationship of romance and friendship and their implications for long-term marriages.
1. How would you answer the following question?
“If a person had all the other qualities you desired, would you marry that person if you were not in love?” Why or why not? What is the basis of your answer?
Cross-cultural studies suggested being in love is becoming a universal basis for marriage and that today’s marriages depend more and more on the “sweetness of its contents.” Yet, scholars argue that high divorce rates may result from people’s adoption of romantic love as a primary basis for marriage because it may lead to unrealistic expectations of emotional fulfillment. This conclusion is supported by studies showing that while all couples experience a decline in their marital satisfaction, couples most likely to divorce began their marriages with the highest levels of affection and romance and showed the steepest decline in marital satisfaction.
Many scholars argue that marriages might be more successful if they were built on deep and abiding friendship rather than romantic love. Evidence for this conclusion comes from studies of long-term happily married couples that say friendship, not romance, is the foundation for an enduring successful marriage.
Do you agree with these conclusions? Are “too high” romantic expectations a significant contributor to relationship failure?
2. To explore this issue consider the following questions:
What are the differences between loving someone and being in love with someone? Between a friend and a romantic partner? What do we expect from our romantic partners that we do not expect from our closest friends? (Text Chapter 11 suggests that the major differences between friendship and romantic love involve differences in emotional intensity, clarity of rules, complexities of feelings, and expectations).
3. Do we expect too much from romance? If you lived with your closest friend for many years do you think you would you have fewer or just as many relationship problems as a typical marriage?

Blake has developed a new measure of personality to assess what personality type people have. It is called the “Blockbuster Personality Type” measure. The measure includes images from the top ten most popular Hollywood movies in the last ten years and asks respondents to describe what is happening in the scenes. Responses are scored in terms of how consistent they are with the original movies, and how much respondents show empathy for the different characters in the scenes. As a result of this scoring, respondents are classified as either being either “active heroes”, “passive victims”, or “conniving villains”, reflecting the hidden desires and goals that they were born with.
Blake wants to encourage people to use the test for selection and recruitment in organisations around the world, so he collects information about the test’s reliability and validity. He asks his first-year psychology class to take the test at the start of semester and at the end of semester and compares their scores for a measure of reliability. To test validity, he uses scores on the test to predict how well his students do in their university studies.
Question: What are some of the issues with what Blake has done? How could he have designed and evaluated his test in a better way? For each issue you identify, explain why it is an issue and how it could be improved.

Discussion (200 to 250 words based on the following
case)
Consider the following Hill Country Community Hospital case
study:
Hill Country Community Hospital is a 100-bed acute-care facility in
rural Texas. The hospital has served the local community for over
40 years but has experienced financial decline over the past 3
years. Hospital administrators believe that the best way to cut
costs is to terminate all contracts with staff physicians and allow
a large, Dallas-based physician group to take over in-hospital
patient care. The move would quickly solve the current budget
crisis, even enabling the hospital to show a profit for the fiscal
year. However, community residents are strongly opposed to the
plan, as they have always been accustomed to receiving in-hospital
care from their family physicians. The proposed move is creating
public relations problems, with both external and internal
audiences. Employees are also highly resistant to the change, as
they fear that their jobs may also be outsourced and that bringing
in outsiders to provide patient care will ruin the hospital’s
reputation. This is creating emotional labor, poor morale, and
increased patient complaints. As resistance is a natural
phenomenon, understanding and working with it effectively is key to
successful organizational consultation. It is essential for the OD
practitioner or consultant to recognize and deal with resistance
that is derived from psychological needs and wants. There are also
elements that have been shown to stimulate “normal” resistance and
therefore should also be considered during the consultation
process.
Post a response to the following:
Identify, analyze, and discuss the various types of resistance affecting the Hill Country Community Hospital and its various stakeholder groups. What do you see as the root cause of this resistance?
