The following table lists the components needed to assemble an end item, lead times, and quantities on hand.

Item End B C D E F G H
LT (wk) 1 3 4 4 2 1 2 1
Amount on hand 0 10 9 25 11 29 6 0

End Item

B(2)   C D(3)

E(2) / F(3) G(2) / E(2) H(4) / E(2)

a. If 20 units of the end item are to be assembled, how many additional units of E are needed? (Hint: You don't need to develop an MRP plan to determine this.)

Additional units ____

b. An order for the end item is scheduled to be shipped at the start of week 15. What is the latest week that the order can be started and still be ready to ship on time? (Hint: You don't need to develop an MRP plan for this part either.)

The latest week ____

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer A

E is required in other components (B, C, and D).

End unit requires 2 B’s

Units to be assembled = 20

Amount on Hand = 10

B = 20*2 = 40

B = 40 – amount on hand

B = 40-10 = 30

End units needed 1 C’s

Units to be assembled = 20

Amount on hand = 9

C = 20* 1= 20

C= 20-9 = 11

End units requires 3 D’s

Unites needs to be assembled =20

Amount on hand =25

D = 20*3=60

D = 60 – 25 = 35

E = (B 30*2) + (C 11*2) + (D 35*2) – Amount on hand of E

E = 60 + 22 + 70 – 11

E = 152-11

E = 141

141 additional Units of E Require to be assembled for 20 end units.

Answer B

In order to complete end item there are three components that are required to be complete and the components are

1. B,E and F

2. C,G and E

3. D,H and E

Lead times are as follows

1. B=3 weeks + E= 2 weeks + F= 1weeks = Total 6 weeks

2. C=4 weeks + G= 2 weeks + E= 2 weeks = Total 8 weeks

3. D=4 weeks + H= 1 weeks + E= 2 weeks = Total 7 weeks

Latest week = start of the week - 8weeks lead time

Latest week = 15 – 8 = 7

So latest start of week 7
