Ethnocentrism refers to the judging of people from other cultures based on one’s own culture. People tend to think that their own culture is superior to others thus finding fault or criticising the cultural practices and beliefs of others. This is a very narrow mind-set that creates lots of problems both in the society and in organizations in this globalised business environment. It’s definitely harmful as the business world attracts talents from all over the world and markets their products and services all over the world.

Organizations should sensitize their employees on the importance of appreciating other culture without any prejudice or pre-conceived notions. They could send their employees across the globe to understand other cultures. They could create workplaces where people from multiple cultures work together. They could arrange for celebrations of festivals from different cultures in the office. McDonalds was able to enter and sustain in India after changing their mind-set regarding vegetarian burgers. Multinational organisations adopt and promote the cultures of other countries as part of their corporate social responsibilities.
