In what ways are Novelty and Curiosity motivational? (1 page)
Novelty and curiosity can be motivational in a number of ways.
If a person is curious about something that he or she has seen, heard, or experienced; he or she may get motivated to find more about it, learn it, or even master it. Let's assume a cook who tastes a new recipe at a social gathering. The cook likes the recipe very much and finds it, unlike something which he has ever prepared or tasted. He would become very curious about the recipe. Being a cook himself, he would like to know what ingredients were used in the recipe and how it was prepared. This curiosity would keep motivating him to find more about the recipe and to prepare it on his own. This motivation may eventually help in learning the new recipe and gradually mastering it.
Novelty also helps one to get motivated. When we see something totally new and find it interesting, we may get motivated to learn about it and to start implementing it. Let'assume a Warehouse manager in an organization who is managing a warehouse through traditional methods. One day, he visits a warehouse of a different company. He finds a new and original method, which was very cost-efficient and simple, being used in that company's warehouse. The manager would become very interested in learning about the new method he saw. He may get motivated to utilize the methods in his own warehouse and may also try to convince his seniors to implement the new method. He may put a lot of effort to customize the new method so that it can be implemented in his warehouse.
With the above points, it can be seen that novelty and curiosity can be very motivational.
