- How would you define or measure intelligence?
- In your opinion, is intelligence determined more by nature or nurture?
- What are some problems in relying on IQ test scores to evaluate one’s overall intelligence?
Intelligence is one’s ability to survive one’s environment by utilizing one’s knowledge and skills. This doesn’t mean that people in one environment may struggle to survive in other environments. Thus, intelligence is not a standard measure to judge people. Although, the necessary foundation is laid in one’s genes, it’s one’s environment such as, parenting, education, employment, culture, religion etc. would help one build one’s intelligence. Almost all the intelligence tests are standardized for the modern job requirements which might brand an uneducated person as less intelligent while they would be more intelligent in their own environment while a man who scores high in the intelligent test would struggle hard to survive in their environment. For example, someone who lives in a forest would be highly intelligent in one’s forest environment while someone who lives in the city would struggle hard to survive in the forest.
