Selective attention refers to try to pay attention to what actually matters. In other words, selective attention means focusing on some relevant work in between many irrelevant works that are going on simultaneously.
A case where I experience selective attention:
Usually, when in normal days, I try to study with Television and music on, my focus always remains on irrelevant things, I.e., TV and music. I pay attention to it, and as a result, I keep on rereading the same line again and again, but still can not understand the meaning.
But, At the time of exams, when I know I have to study, then, I easily grasp the things written in my books without losing my focus to the voices outside of music. This, for me, is selective attention.
How to avoid such situations in the future:
1. Meditate: meditation is very helpful in improving the concentration power of someone, by calming the mind. It is helpful in improving one's selective attention.
2. Exercise: Just like meditation, exercise also helps to increase the concentration power of the brain by improving the blood flow of the body, and is helpful to calm the mind.
3. Drinking water: Before trying to focus on anything, we must drink water and remain hydrated because it Also helps to focus.
4. Short breaks: in order to maintain the concentration and attentiveness for the relevant work, one should take small rest breaks at specific time intervals.
