Leadership is the ways and means of motivating, helping or encouraging a group of people to deliver high level of performance in order to meet the common goal in alignment with the values of the organization.

There are two types of leadership. They are:-

  • Formal leadership – When a person is officially appointed as the leader of the group then it is called formal leadership. Managers and directors are formal leaders.
  • Informal leadership – When a person is not appointed officially as a leader of the group then it is called informal leadership. Informal leaders are bright employees who are future formal leaders.

Leadership style is nothing but the style of leader to direct and motivate people in order to complete the tasks effectively.

Situational leadership or adaptive leadership is a leadership style by which a leader or manager of an organization adjust his style or behavior as per the team member's or the group's requirements. It includes both directive behavior and supportive behavior. This is also called an adaptive leadership that focus on developing people, build trust and support employees to give their best and to maintain the leadership style across the organization that is essential for improved performance of employees and the organization.

This leadership style that can make a team successful because: -

  • This style can be adjusted as per the behavior and skill level of the employees.
  • The leader focus on motivating employees by supporting them based on their needs.
  • This leadership style create supportive work environment which helps in increasing productivity.
  • Motivation and support of leader helps in employee retention.

The leadership style can make the team unsuccessful because: -

  • This type of style create fear and uncertainty in employees mind because situational leadership might alter the behavior of managers as per the situation.
  • This type of leadership is influenced by external factors and rather than changing the situation, leaders might alter their response to the situation which is not always effective.
