  • Wood beam Question.
  • A simply supported #1 DF-L (Douglas Fir-Larch) beam 8 foot in length has a point load of 2K at mid span. The beam is 4 x 8 in the strong axis orientation, and is fully braced, the moisture content is less than 19% and the max deflection is L/360. (include the weight of the beam in your calculations)
  1. Find the Tabulated stresses.
  2. Find the Allowable stresses
  3. Find the Actual stresses
  4. Is the member adequate.

  • Using the same parameters as above calculate assuming a moisture content above 19%.

  • Using the same parameters as problem #1, your supplier has advised you that DF-L is not available, the only wood available in a 4 x 8 is Western Cedars, is this acceptable alternative?
