Gareth Morgan gave 8 metaphors which help us view an organization from different perspectives Following are Morgan's 8 organizational metaphors

  • Machine: An organization can be viewed as a series of connected parts which co-ordinate and work together to deliver repeatable output
  • Organism: An organization is like a living organism. It responds to its environment and in order to survive, it must adapt as per its environment
  • Brain: An organization is like a collective brain that is able to process information and learn over time
  • Cultural system: An organization is like a mini-society in itself with its own sets of cultural values and traditions
  • Political system: AN organization is a political system where there is a constant effort to gain power and influence
  • Psychic prison: People's thoughts and capabilities are limited by a collection of myths and stories
  • Instrument of domination: It is an instrument to impose wills and exploit resources for own benefit at the expense of others
  • Flux and transformation: An organization is always in a flux - continuously changing and evolving over time
