Expert Solution

Organizational development in an organization is a systematic process of managing and implementing change in the organizational processes and culture to ensure that the organization becomes more efficient, achieves high performance and attains a level of sustainable growth and gets the competitive advantage over its competitors on a long-term and sustainable basis.

It involves aligning the long-term strategy of the organization, its processes, and people functions to ensure that change implemented in the organization is deep-rooted and sustainable. It usually involves an intervention by the top management or external consultants to re-orient the processes or organizational structure in order to reinvent the direction in which the organization is heading and also achieve a significant advantage in the market with regards to increase in market share and profitability. This would also mean that the people in the organization get energized and motivated to get involved in the change processes and some of them assume roles of being re-engineering leaders to shape the revamped organization and its business.

Obviously, it's an evolving process and involves the following:

  • Recognition of change by top management
  • Preparation of blueprint and change strategy by top management or external consultant
  • Formation of change management team and appointment of leaders
  • Preparation of an "As-Is" state and "Desired" state document.
  • Plan for the change to be implemented in the process, structure, and strategy to attain the desired state.
  • Execute the plan and efficiently allocate resources to manage the change.
  • Reinforce the change and learnings to ensure change is sustained.
