What would happen to a pregnancy if you removed the corpus luteum during the initial stages of concepts development? Explain why.

Solutions

Expert Solution

When the Corpus Luteum is removed after Pregancy then the progesterone hormone ( known as Pregnancy hormone as it maintains pregnancy ) released from Corpus luteum is not there so Termination of Pregnancy takes place .

Explanation

*At about the 14th day of the cycle, the distended follicle ruptures, and the ovum is extruded into the abdominal cavity (ovulation).

*Ruptured follicle fills with blood (corpus hemor-
rhagicum), which later on converted into yellowish, lipid rich corpus luteum .

*This initiates the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, during which the luteal cells secrete estrogen and progesterone.

Function of Progesterone
*Secretory effect on endometrium
(tortuous gland)
*Decrease motility and increased
secretion of uterine tubes
*Decreasing excitability of uterine
smooth muscle but increases RMP.
* Scanty, thick mucous secretion from
cervix.

*When the corpus luteum regresses, lower plasma levels of progesterone (and estradiol) no longer support the endometrium

*.Foci of necrosis start appearing in the endometrium, and these coalesce. Also In addition, there occurs spasm and degeneration of the walls of the spiral arteries take place, leading to spotty hemorrhages that become confluent and result in the menstrual flow.

*At the end of menstruation, all but the deep layers of the endometrium have sloughed ans so the termination of Pregnancy occur .
