The corpus luteum is developed from the rupture of the graffian
follicle after the release of ovum.
If fertilization occurs ,then the corpus luteum persists . And
it secrets the progesterone and estrogen .
It acts as a small endocrine gland and it remains in the ovary
for 3-4 months.
During this period of 3 months, it secrets large amount of
progesterone and small quantity of estrogen which is essential for
the maintenance of pregnancy.
After 3 months, placenta starts secreting hormones and corpus
luteum degenerates .This is the normal role of the corpus luteum in
pregnant uterus.
If corpus luteum is removed before 3 months i.e., during the
intial stages of conceptus development abortion occurs. Because to
maintain pregnancy we require hormonal balance of the progesterone
and estrogen. And if corpus luteum is removed before placenta
starts secreting the hormones then abortion will occur.
