How does an ovarian follicle differ from a corpus
luteum in the ovary? What hormone(s) does the corpus luteum
secrete?
In the ovaries of the female reproductive system, an ovarian follicle is a fluid-filled sac that contains an immature egg, or oocyte. During each cycle, one follicle will release a mature egg, and the follicles that don't release eggs will dissolve. If the egg fertlizes than it will implant itself into the uterine linings.
Corpus luteum, yellow hormone-secreting body in the female reproductive system. it is the structure left behind after the egg bursts from the follicle (or ovulation). In the process of ovulution corpus luteum is formed in an ovary at the site of a follicle, or sac, that has matured and released its ovum, or egg. If the egg is not fertilized, the corpus luteum becomes inactive after 10–14 days, and menstruation occurs.
The corpus luteum secretes estrogens and progesterone, estrogen is responsible changes in the uterus that make it more suitable for implantation of the fertilized ovum and the nourishment of the embryo
