Weight bias is becoming a more of a prominent issue.Sizeism is discrimination against someone due to their weight.Fatness is often framed as a problem in need of management.Thin bodies are considered healthy and beautiful while fat bodies are aesthetically displeasing or unhealthy. Our societies legitimately puts people health in danger.33%of actresses on TV right know are underweight.but portrayed as being perfectly healthy.Skinny in our society and media is portrayed as the only health way of life but healthy is determined by our genetics and it is different for every person. When we look at mental health of persons with obesity who experience bias, physiological stress leads to weight gain which then leads to disordered eating and then maladaptive behaviours.
My body composition results make me realize that BMI is not the most accurate as BMI is an index that look's at some body's body weight divided by their height.18.5 and below is underweight.18.5 to 24.9 is your health range.25 to 29.9 is overweight and a BMI over 30 is classified as obese. The major problem with using BMI as a marker of health when it comes to body weight, because it penalizes you if you have a lot of muscle and you are healthier .BMI's reliabiity as an indicator of health breaks down for athlete's like Lynch.Factors such as age, gender, ethnicity and muscle mass can influence relationship between BMI and body fat. What's most important clinically is a persons body composition. The percentage of body fat and the percentage of body muscle is way more important. There are more effective ways to assess the body composition and overall health like hydrostatic weighing along with MRIscans and waist to hip ratio.Using dual energy X-ray obsorptiometry or DEXA image helps to measure total body composition, including fat mass, lean body mass and bone density.
