Where does sociology fit into the discussion of understanding race relations? How can using your sociological perspective break down some of the barriers that keep people from seeing the issues clearly?
Sociology as a discipline that
scientifically studies the society, interaction between various
groups in the societies, culture etc. Race is one of the areas that
differentiates people genetically, geographically and
behaviourally. So, studying race and how it impacts the
relationship and exchanges among various races becomes very
important in order to understand the current social
structure.
Historically, the basic misunderstanding that one race is superior
than the other race has brought lots of inequality in the society
and the economical imbalance it caused continues still today. Race
was also connected to the intelligence which was a
misunderstanding. Later, scientists proved that race has got
nothing to do with intelligence.
People need to understand the fact that race shouldn't be used as a
tool to determine the ability and behaviors of people but they need
to understand the environment, social structure etc. in order
understand one's behavior better. So, stereotyping someone based on
the race, Colorado, ethnicity will be an injust act. Sociology
plays a major role in making people understand the ubtle
differences among the races.
