Social stratification or stratification in general has been defined as the way in which society is divided in different strata. This division may be in the form of socioeconomic status, race of an individual or their ethnicity. The society is categorisedjn these forms where the deciding factors will be in the form of income, race, wealth, property as well as power of individuals. These are in the form of distinct vertical layers, and would be distributed unevenly in the layers. People having greater resources would be at the higher strata and the ones having lesser resources would be sitting on the lower steps.
The US people tend to be believing that people have equal chances at achieving success, but in reality, treatment does occur on the basis of prejudice or rank, rather than talent. Talent does play an important role, but is not the only deciding factor. Social stratification make the inequities more prominent. Though in an individual level, people might fight these inequalities, on the level of the community, it is the society that actually supports stratification.
Race has been an important factor to determine level since long times in history, though, these differences seem to be lessened. Due to this colour perspective, whites are thought to be superior or more dominant than people of colour. Generated worldwide is this feeling, where the white race is to be given more respect. Due to these laid concepts, it comes as the inherent thought that whites are superior.
With the changing times, these perspectives have begun to change. Social inequalities have begun to be diminishing and set mentalities have begun to be transformed.
