Given: A short cylinder of steel has a diameter of 150 mm and length of 500 mm. It comes out of a heat treatment process at a uniform temperature of 200oC and is plunged into an unstirred bath of oil at a temperature of 20oC.
Find: Considering heat loss from only the cylindrical surface (ignore the ends), which orientation would cool more quickly? One orientation is for the axis to be parallel to gravity and the other perpendicular to gravity.
Assume: 1. For the situation with the axis parallel to gravity, assume the cylinder behaves as a flat vertical plate. 2. Use the properties of unused engine oil (Table A.5) to model the oil bath
