In: Anatomy and Physiology
Central nervous
sytem:
1. It consists of spinal cord and brain
2. They carry short nerve impulses
3. Main function = Analyze and organize information from sensory
organs
4. Injury causes a global effect on the body
5. Generally, these nerves do not exhibit regeneration
Peripheral nervous
system:
1. It consists of motor neurons, sensory neurons, and sensory
receptors
2. They contain long nerve fibers
3. The main function = Transmit sensory information to the CNS and
send signals to the effector organs
4. Injury causes a local effect on the body
5. Generally, these nerves exhibit regeneration
Somatic nervous
system:
1. Effectors = Voluntary muscles
2. Function = Adjustment to the external environment
3. Center = Anterior horn cells
4. Neurotransmitter = Acetylcholine
5. One synapse
Autonomic nervous
system:
1. Effectors = Involuntary muscles
2. Function = Adjustment to the internal environment
3. Center = Lateral horn cells
4. Neurotransmitter = Acetylcholine, adrenaline, and
noradrenaline
5. Two synapses
