Gender discrimination

Gender discrimination is there for ages and women had to fight for their rights for property, education, vote, social status and political equality. For men to agree to that they would give women equal opportunity. Even the so called developed countries haven’t given enough opportunity for the women folk to involve in different fields because men all around the world still think that they are weaker sex.

Work place is no different, they face the same problems that they face in the society and at home. Women are not paid equally to that of men, although they possess the same qualifications, skills and spend same amount of time at work. Women are overlooked for their promotion as most of the companies feel that women can’t handle the pressure, they can’t travel and they can’t manage the male subordinates branding them as soft gender. Women are overlooked for promotion when they go for maternity leave because companies discontinue their service when they go for maternity leave. When they comeback they see a new guy or a junior man got promoted. The company says that they are resuming their service but they also mention the break of service thus pushing them to level zero.

When it comes to professional development and higher studies, more men are trained than women. Companies say many reasons such as, women can’t travel to the training place, they can’t keep up with both their domestic work and company work and still manage the course or training etc. This brings the morale of the female employee down and it further affects their performance at home, work and their functioning in the society.

Although women are more productive and good at multi-tasking, when it comes to pay, promotion and other benefits, they are definitely overlooked.

Use of power/position

Male managers and supervisors use their power to dominate the female employees and this happens everywhere. The primitive characteristic of oppressing the female in all spheres of life continues in the workplace too. When managers are supervisors hate their partners or wives, they tend to displace their aggression and anger on the female co-workers and subordinates. They try to prove that they are in-charge and females could do nothing. People who are submissive, just don’t react but people who are assertive start questioning the way they are treated. This will only result in them being treated even worse.

Men always believe that they are right and they are the bosses everywhere. When a women speaks against their opinion or idea, they are not able to tolerate it and they take it as an ego issue trying to retaliate them by giving them more work and more trouble. They use this to demote them or overlook them from being promoted. Some people go to an extent of dismissing them because their ego is bigger than them and they couldn’t face that female at the workplace.

Power struggle is mostly seen in collective cultures and it is visible in individualistic cultures. In collective cultures, women were treated as housemaids, sexual pleasure givers and child bearing machines but now, they are allowed to study and get a job. These societies are in a transition state that they keep evolving. In individualistic societies although women have almost equal opportunity, power struggle both at work and in society still continues.

The society is witnessing a sea of change in the workplace where women have started getting their rightful place and some have reached the top positions of multinational corporations. Although this seems to be a good sign, the trend has to continue until this change occurs everywhere in order to balance power at workplace.

Sexual desire

Although women are seen as weaker sex, in my opinion men are weaker sex and that’s why they are not able to control their urge to talk and act in a sexually inductive way to women colleagues. Men are looking for opportunities for sexual encounters by brainwashing women or tempting them with different tools such as physical body, money, status etc.

The biggest trouble with sexual desire is that almost all the managers are matured adults who either have a partner or they are married. So, this means they are all looking for an extramarital relationship by betraying their partners or wives. They try to impress their female colleagues to win their heart for a date. If they agree it happens otherwise it takes the next shape of sexual harassment. This stage is very dangerous for women because they are allowed to work only now and they have got a job after a long struggle but now if someone comes and give them psychological trouble, either they would be stopped or they will relieve thus putting their career and life astray.

Only men initiate sexual talk and act? The answer is no because few women for getting job, getting promotion and pay hike adjust with the superiors. Female employees initiate all the attracting and tempting behaviours and get whatever they wanted. In this way it becomes mutual where both the parties involve in sexual acts but harassment mostly comes from male employees or supervisors.

Thus the workplace poses more challenges and threats to women even in this 21st century. People’s innate mind-set remains in the old age. It’s the domination that remains in men’s heart and it reflects in all spheres of life such as home, society and workplace which means we have long way to go in terms of women empowerment, especially at the workplace.
