Hypothalamus and anterior pituitary: The hypothalamus is connected to anterior pituitary gland by means of a special portal blood system. Hypothalamus regulates the function of the pituitary gland. Hypothalamic releasing and inhibiting hormones goes through a capillary plexus to the portal veins and then reach into the anterior pituitary. Anterior pituitary is the front portion of the pituitary gland. Hormones produced by the anterior pituitary enter a secondary capillary plexus and enter into circulation / secretion.In this way the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary turn neuronal AP and turn them into hormones for secretion.The anterior pituitary produces seven hormones. These are:

  • Growth hormone (GH)
  • Thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH)
  • Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)
  • Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH)
  • Beta endorphin
  • Prolactin.

Hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary influence growth, sexual development, skin pigmentation, thyroid function, and adrenocortical function.
