1. What are the benefits to angiosperms by having their seeds enclosed in fruit (Give at least two)?
2. Name at least three factors in a plant’s environment that aid in fruit dispersal. Please think beyond fruits consumed by humans.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1) angiosperms have fruits, fruits are the ripened ovary, seeds develop from the fertilized ovules, seeds are found in the fruits, the fruit protects the seeds from desiccation Unripe fruits, are often very hard so it protects the seeds from being eaten.

some fruits are rich in sugars, those are consumed by animals, animals take these fruits to distant locations from the parent plant, this helps in the dispersion of seeds.

some fruits have air-filled cavities, which helps the fruit to float in the water, so those plants near the river or other water streams, shed fruits to water, since the fruits have air-filled cavities it float on water and are taken to distant locations, this also helps in the dispersion of seed.

some fruits are very light and it has fan-shaped structures, which can be taken by the wind to far distant locations, this also helps in the seed dispersion.

so fruits helps to protect the seeds as well as dispersion of seeds.

A botanist wishes to estimate the typical number of seeds for a certain fruit. She samples 36 specimens and counts the number of seeds in each. Use her sample results (mean = 76.3, standard deviation = 10.8) to find the 99% confidence interval for the number of seeds for the species. Enter your answer as an open-interval (i.e., parentheses) accurate to 1 decimal place.   99% C.I. =
