1. Describe your personal view on algebra being a requirement for your degree program. How do you feel about being forced to take math?
2. Mathematics is part of the liberal arts curriculum, as well as the curriculum for any STEM field. Describe what you think of when you hear the phrase “liberal arts.” What about “STEM?”
3. Describe what you think the purpose of higher education is.
1.Since so many students fail to develop a solid foundation of important subject like Algebra, an alarming number graduate from high school unprepared for college or work. Many end up taking remedial math in college, which makes getting a degree a longer, more expensive process than it is for their more-prepared classmates. So I think Algebra is a very crucial part of your undergraduate program.
Well ..., Of course, math is good to keep you sharp and can translate to real life such as when it comes to money. I think that higher level math should be an option for those who are interested in math. Most people take a class, pass it, and never have to use the information again. So I feel It should not be forced upon anyone.
2.Liberal arts education forces us to decode systems of symbols. We learn how complex systems of symbols can be and what is required to decode them and why that can be a pleasurable process. That skill will come in handy for a large number of future career paths. STEM fields ultimately teach control and manipulation (of the world around us), the idea that we can fill our desires with more, more, more. On the other hand, the liberal arts teach self-control.
3.The Purpose of Higher Education: To Create Prepared Minds. The focus of higher education should be on creating prepared minds in their graduates, and government-sponsored research and development in higher education institutions is a great way to enrich the education of future engineers. Higher education institutions, primarily universities, must have a two-pronged approach in the search for knowledge, to develop the highest degree of on the permanent thinking upon the value systems, motivations, attitudes and behavior which are appropriate to confront the processes of generation of learners
